Diu was a portugese colony until it was taken over by India in 1961. Between 14th and 15th centuries, Diu was an important trading post and naval base from which the Ottoman Turks controlled the shipping routes in the northern part of the Arabian sea.
After an unsuccessful attempt to capture Diu island in 1531, by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, who was assisted by the Turkish Navy, the Portugese were finally able to secure control in 1535, taking control of a quarrel between sultan and the Mughal emperor, Humayun.
Diu's crowning glory is the huge fort which was completed in 1541. A massive Portugese fort with its double moat (one tidal) must once have been virtually impregnable but sea erosion and neglect are leading to a slow but inevitable collapse. Piles of cannon balls litter the place and the ramparts have a superb array of cannons, many old yet in good condition.
Diu also has many good beaches which include the Nagoa Beach, Vanakbara
