Terekhol
Terekhol is a place located on the most northern tip of Goa and it is enclave in the Maharashtra border. It is located on a piece of high ground giving good views across the water and on elevation on the north side of the Tiracol River estuary.
There is also a small Maratha fort in the premises and the high walls of this fort from the Arambol headland are clearly seen. This fort was captured by the Portuguese in the year 1776. After that the Portuguese built a small and beautiful church inside the fort.
The views one can enjoy from this fort are really very magnificent and on the south side of this fort is Arambol, Fort Aguada and Chapora. It is now days a hotel and one can enjoy the romantic and special, unique experience here. There is also something more than just to watch the fort here like the more excited tourist can enjoy the motorcycle outing at this place.
How to go to Terekhol
There is a bus from Panaji to Tiracol and it leaves at 11.30 am. Also shared taxies are available from Mapusa to Siolim. Cross the Chapora river can be crossed with a boat used to transports people or vehicles across a body of water and also such boats operate on a regular schedules.
One can continue to Querim or Keri with a shared taxi, after that can cross the Tiracol river and remaining 2 kilometers from there. The Tiracol ferry is available after every half an hour from 6 am to 11.30 pm and it takes 15 minutes for crossing the river.
Fort Aguada
Fort Aguada was built and completed in the year 1612. It is one of the strongest Portuguese coastal forts. The beaches extend right from this place towards the Maharashtra border in a total 30 kilometer sandy stretch. On the north side tip of the Mandovi estuary with the Nerul River to the east, Fort Aguada is the main place keeping the Dutch Navy at bay.
There is a large well and many springs available here are useful to supply drinking water to ships at harbor and also responsible to name this fort as aguada means watering place. This port has seen so many actions against Marathas.
Actually this fort was built by the Portuguese from year 1609 to 1612. It was useful for entering the River Mandovi, and protects Old Goa from potential enemy attacks. It is one of the best preserved Portuguese forts in Goa. The Cabo Raj Bhawan as well as the Marmugao harbor is very near to this fort.
This fort now days have a central jail in it. Also a lighthouse is located nearby this fort. One can visit the fort in between 4 pm to 5 pm daily.
